Warm stitches, grateful hearts, and small circles (scroll down for the video)
Hello, dear friends,
Pull up a chair, bring your knitting—or whatever is keeping your hands happy—and settle in for a little visit.
October brought wool, Thanksgiving, moments of rest, and reminders that there is plenty to discover close to home. As November begins, I’m carrying those threads forward: making slowly, caring for what we have, and thinking about how to approach the coming holidays within our means.
From my knitting basket

Socktober gave me time to think about the humble handmade sock: the choices we make, the things we learn, and the satisfaction of turning a heel. My latest sock moved through the heel turn and into those every-other-row gusset decreases. A little progress, one round at a time.
My handspun sweater is still growing, too. Both sleeve cuffs are finished, and I’ve been working the sleeves while spinning more blended fibre along the way. Making the yarn as I go gives this sweater its own pace. There is always another step before the next stretch of knitting!
I enjoyed sharing a quiet Saturday knitting and spinning update as well. Those cozy conversations are such a lovely part of DollCanCreate. Whether you are working on socks, mittens, a sweater, or something entirely different, I’m glad we can keep one another company.
Making room for rest
My October study leave began with a familiar feeling: tired, worn out, and ready for some breathing space. I had books to read, Advent to plan, and December music on my mind. I also needed rest.
I’m still learning to leave room for that.
There is something helpful about setting down the expectation that every available hour must produce something. A quiet cup of matcha, a few pages of reading, or time with wool can be enough for the moment.
Perhaps you have needed that reminder this autumn, too.
Gratitude in ordinary places
Thanksgiving found its way into my ministry through “Take 10: A Thankful Way to Live.” Minutes, moments, and memories became an invitation to pause and notice.
One October afternoon with the knitters brought stories about growing older, childhood chores, and Sundays when the laundry stayed off the line. We laughed about the things we still do because of how we were raised—including a certain reluctance to hang our bloomers out for the neighbours!
These visits matter. There is so much life tucked into an ordinary conversation, and so much wisdom shared over busy hands.
November on the 100 Mile Path
This month, I’m bringing the 100 Mile Path and our budgets together.
As the holidays approach, it is easy for the list of things to buy and do to grow. I want to take a little time first to notice what is already here: food in the pantry, wool in the basket, something worth repairing, and people with whom we can share our time.
My November words are:
Small steps. Close to home. Within my means.
That might look like using what we have, finishing a handmade gift, choosing something thoughtfully from a local maker, or enjoying an outing without needing to bring anything home.
There is room for creativity within a budget. Sometimes a limit is what gets us thinking.
Looking toward Advent
In my ministry, I’m preparing for Advent around the theme “Love Came Near.” Hope, peace, joy, and love will guide the weeks ahead, with a small Christmas cantata also taking shape.
The words are keeping me company as November begins. Love comes near through a shared meal, a listening ear, something made by hand, and the simple act of showing up.
My invitation this month: choose one small thing to use, mend, make, or share before adding something new.
What will yours be? I’d love to hear what is in your making basket—or what you are discovering along your own close-to-home path.
Thank you for spending a little time here with me.
With warm stitches and a grateful heart,
Grannie Doll
